What? Cat's eat baby chicks?
We got 4 beautiful new baby chicks this spring to add to our chicken collection. Two black and two white silkies. We didn't have them more then one day when our beloved cat Clarisse went in for the kill and ate one of the white chicks. We were horrified and felt dumb for not thinking about that possibility in the first place. It turns out that Clair also injured the other white chick and a few days later she died too. Daddy built a cat proof cage and then we put them in the screened in room for safe keeping. We still had the two black ones. Then this past Saturday Piper looked outside in the screened in room and noticed that Clair had a black chick in her mouth. Daddy ran out and got the chick from Clair and then chucked Clair out of the screened in room. The chicks cage had been left open by a sweet two year old boy that will not be named. The little chick seemed to be okay, but as we looked at the other chick, Daddy noticed that this chick was not okay. He picked it up and it just seemed lifeless. It was barely breathing. It was sweet to watch how much he cared for the tiny chick. He rubbed her chest trying to stimulated her heart to keep beating. He kept her moving so that she would not fall asleep and die. He was late for a church meeting and needed to leave. He handed the chick to little Piper and told her to keep petting the chick and loving her and try to keep her alive. Piper did just that. She was so worried about the chick. Piper let us know that she had said a prayer for the chick and she hoped that Heavenly Father would help her to live. Soon the chick was chirping, then opening her eyes, then flapping her wings. I am so grateful for this sweet experience for Piper. Her faith in prayer has grown so much. Two days later now the chick is still alive and it looks like she will live through it. When she was first found, no one could have convinced me that she would live through that. I thought she was too far gone. It was cute to see Daddy and Piper be so loving and caring about the situation.
